SKI TOURING IN THE LYNGEN ALPS – NORWAY
Departure from Milan with a direct flight to Tromsø, the gateway to the Far North and the spectacular Lyngen Alps: a mountain range rising directly from the Arctic Sea, with peaks dropping into the fjords and descents that are ideal for those looking for fresh snow and spectacular lines.
The concept
A trip for those who love powder snow and a different approach to ski touring compared to the often crowded resorts of the Alps, immersed in wild landscapes that are hard to forget.
Most tours start on skis directly from sea level, with the sea and fjords always present in the background. When conditions are right, the snow can be cold, dry and light, offering long, continuous descents in an environment completely different from the Alps.
The routes are chosen day by day according to the snow and weather conditions, the technical level and fitness of the group, as well as the expectations for the day. The aim is to make the most of the conditions, choosing the most suitable route and aspect each day.
Living the Lyngen
In recent years, several airlines have offered direct flights from Milan to Tromsø. After picking up the rental car, it takes around two hours to reach the Lyngen Alps.
The ideal accommodation is a private cabin by the sea in the area around Lyngseidet, a small village located roughly halfway along the peninsula and an excellent base for reaching the different ski touring areas.
The idea is simple: short daily drives, starting on skis from the sea and looking for the best snow on the most favourable aspects. Distances are relatively short and, generally within half an hour's drive from the base, there is access to a wide range of ski touring possibilities.
In the evening, we return to the cabin, cook together and enjoy the quieter side of the trip, far from ski resorts and the pace of the Alps.
Iconic routes
The area offers an enormous variety of possibilities, from easier tours that are ideal for getting familiar with the Arctic environment, to longer and more technical objectives.
Some of the classic routes close to our base include Rørnestinden, Goalsevárri/Kavringtinden and Fastdalstinden. For quieter days or less favourable conditions, shorter routes towards Skihytta and Rørneshytta can be chosen, while heading further north along the peninsula opens up other possibilities, such as Russelvfjellet and numerous variations on the slopes descending directly towards the fjords.
For those looking for more demanding objectives, with greater elevation gain or a more mountaineering character, the Lyngen Alps naturally offer an enormous number of possibilities.
The final choice will be made day by day, taking into account snow conditions, weather, aspect, technical ability and fitness of the group. There is no rigid programme: the aim is to find the best tour and, above all, the best descent that the conditions allow.
After each day: back to the cabin, a hot shower, cooking together and — if the sky puts on its show — the Northern Lights dancing above the fjord, the natural finale to an intense and authentic Arctic day.
