Intro to Ski Mountaineering – Learn the Basics, Safely

A day designed for those who want to approach ski mountaineering in a simple but thoughtful way: learning how to use the equipment, the basic movement skills, and the key concepts needed to move safely in winter terrain.
It’s the perfect outing to understand whether this discipline is for you, while living a real experience suitable for anyone taking their first steps into skimo.

Who is it for

For anyone who already skis on groomed slopes (blue and red runs) and wants to try venturing beyond the marked pistes, or for those who have always dreamed of trying ski mountaineering but don’t know where to start.
No technical background or high performance is required: just basic skiing skills and the desire to walk uphill.

Plan of the day

We usually meet in Madonna di Campiglio. After a short briefing on the equipment (skins, ski crampons, avalanche beacon, shovel and probe), we learn how to prepare the ski setup for the ascent.
From here, we move on a simple yet scenic itinerary, chosen according to snow and weather conditions.
A classic and ideal route is the track leading to Malga Fevri, an open and panoramic plateau above Madonna di Campiglio: gentle slopes, wide spaces, and the perfect terrain to learn safely.

During the ascent you will learn:

  • the basic uphill technique with skins and how to manage your pace,
  • essential winter safety notions, plus an introduction to reading the snow and choosing the best line.

During the descent, we ski on easy terrain — either on-piste or off-piste depending on your skill level and snow conditions.
