A Classic and Accessible Tour in the Heart of the Brenta Dolomites
A highly scenic route with a distinctly Dolomitic character, ideal for those seeking a safe yet rewarding ski tour. The ascent to Cima Roma peak on backcountry skis is perfect for anyone wanting to experience high mountain terrain without significant technical difficulties—while still enjoying all the charm and grandeur of the Dolomites.
The tour starts at the upper station of the Grostè cable car (2,500 m), near Rifugio Stoppani. Skis go on right away, and the route begins with a gentle traverse westward across the wide, snow-covered Grostè plateau. The eye is immediately drawn to the north slope of Cima Grostè, while the track gradually gains elevation beneath the impressive faces of Cima Falkner and the Campanile dei Camosci.
The setting is wide open, silent, almost lunar. The climb continues steadily along gentle rises on the southeast slope of Cima Roma, with consistently moderate gradients. Only the final ramp becomes a bit steeper, requiring a few firm steps before reaching the summit (2,832 m)—a solitary balcony overlooking the dramatic spires of the Brenta.
The descent follows the same route. Whether on spring snow or powder, the slope offers wide, safe turns and remains enjoyable even in less-than-perfect snow conditions.
