Presanella - Normal Route

Presanella - Normal Route

Level: Beginner

Duration: 2 days

Daily drop: +1200/day

A classic two-day ascent to the highest peak in Trentino county. Presanella rises above the western side of Val Rendena with its broad glacier basins, dark granite ridges, and unmistakable summit pyramid. Despite being considered the normal route, the ascent is never trivial and offers a complete alpine experience: trail hiking, ferrata sections, snowfields, and high-mountain terrain.

The route crosses a landscape deeply shaped by glaciers and the history of mountaineering in the Adamello–Presanella group. Even today, the mountain retains a wild and isolated atmosphere, especially in the early season, when snow still covers much of the route and the ascent feels more alpine and continuous.

Day 1: Approach to Rifugio Segantini

Meeting in the afternoon in the village of Pinzolo, followed by a drive up Val Nambrone to the parking area at around 2,000 meters. From here, an easy but scenic trail climbs steadily toward Rifugio Segantini a cozy and excellent alpine hut +reached in approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes.

The hut sits in a spectacular position beneath the southern face of Presanella, surrounded by moraines, waterfalls, and granite walls. Evening light over the glacier basin and the Brenta Dolomites creates one of the most beautiful settings in the area. Dinner and overnight stay at the hut.

Day 2: Summit of Presanella

Departure before the sunrise with headlamps. The route first follows moraines and rocky terrain toward the Bocchetta del Monte Nero, gradually gaining height in a barren alpine landscape shaped by retreating glaciers. Depending on the season, the final approach to the pass is often on snow.

At the Bocchetta del Monte Nero, an equipped ferrata section allows passage onto the northern side of the mountain. In the darkness and first morning light, the atmosphere becomes distinctly alpine: loose rock, snow patches, iron cables, and the vast silence of the upper mountain. After crossing the pass, the route continues through a wide detrital basin toward Passo del Monte Nero and nearby Bivacco Orobica. Short equipped sections alternate with snowfields and rocky terrain. In good early-season conditions, the presence of snow often makes progression smoother and more enjoyable both on ascent and descent.

From the bivouac, the final section to the summit is less technical but highly panoramic. The broad summit of Presanella offers extraordinary views over the Adamello glaciers, the Brenta Dolomites, Ortler, and — on clear days — as far as the Bernina range.

Descent follows the same route back to Rifugio Segantini, with a well-earned stop before returning to the valley.
