Ascent of the Normal Route of Carè Alto

A rewarding two-day alpine experience in the Adamello group, far from the crowds. Carè Alto dominates the landscape with its unmistakable profile, easily recognizable from Val Rendena and the Giudicarie Valleys. The normal route is not technically trivial and is ideal for those wishing to approach classic mountaineering, gaining confidence on rock and snow sections.

These glaciers were the site of significant battles during World War I, known as the “White War” of the Adamello. The landscape still preserves traces of those years: near the summit, remnants of stone and wooden barracks and a large cableway wheel are still visible.

Day 1: Approach to the Hut
The ascent starts from Spiazzo, in Val Rendena, passing through Val di Borzago to Pian della Sega, where the car can be left. From there, a steep trail climbs 1,200 meters of elevation gain in approximately 2.5–3 hours to reach the Rifugio Carè Alto, a cozy and excellent alpine where Gianni and his staff will make you feel at home.

Outside weekends, a quiet evening at the hut is guaranteed.

Day 2: Summit of Carè Alto
Departure just before dawn with headlamps. After the equipped section known as Bus del Gat, the trail crosses the stream descending from the remnants of the eastern Niscli glacier. The first morning light reveals the unmistakable profile of the Brenta Dolomites to the east.

The route continues on large granite ribs up to the Sas de la Stria. From here, the slopes become gentler until the glacier approach. Panoramic views open to Cavento, Crozzon del Lares, the Adamello group, and the Brenta Dolomites.

Once on the glacier, harness and crampons are put on to cross towards the north ridge of Carè Alto. The face, once a large ice slope, now alternates between hard snow and rock slabs. The exposed ridge follows, with mixed rock and snow passages, whose presence varies depending on the season and yearly conditions. The climb is never trivial and alternates exposed sections with enjoyable ridge steps. At the summit, the view spans the Adamello group, the Dolomites, and the Bernina Mountains.

Descent follows the same route, with a well-deserved stop at the hut for refreshment.
